In 2012, enter a young and inspired designer, nervous to see her work displayed for the first time to the public eye. This is Sage Wosminity. At 15 she entered spotlight as the youngest designer to grace Saskatchewan Fashion Week. Now, a year older, a year wiser, Sage is returning not as a fresh face, but an established one. You can tell by the grin on her face that she is excited to unveil what she calls a more “mature” look.
“It’s totally different from last year. Last year I wasn’t sure how anyone was going to react, but now I have it more figured out and know what I like.”

Part of that growth no doubt is in part to her experience balancing the books and her design, which certainly is a workload few students have to manage. As a high school student, Sage faces some challenges that are unique to her. She describes her difficulty in trying to find time to create pieces. Most of what she creates is custom order, or for the next fashion show she is in. There isn’t time for much else.
“It’s difficult because I have to deal with school, so that’s harder because it takes away time from sewing.”
However, she isn’t alone. She is able to continue sketching, sewing and designing, with the help of her family. They help her out with some of the business sides of designing, so she can focus on her designs, and not become overwhelmed by the challenges of balancing school and a career.
Design is not something that is a new hobby she has picked up either. Starting young and creating her own clothing, it was when she began working with Dean Renwick that she put those years of talent and practice into creating for others. To her, she has always known she wanted to be a designer, but it was just about waiting for the right time to start.

“I’ve always wanted to (design), ever since I was little. Two summers ago I started working with Dean Renwick and he suggested applying for Saskatchewan Fashion Week. I started out making stuff for myself, (but) then I started to create for Saskatchewan Fashion Week.”
Last year Wosminity’s designs immediately grabbed the attention of the audience for its clean, elegant look. The black fabric with accents of colour; it was incredibly functional and forward for Saskatchewan. Nearly a year later she is still asked to create the same designs she showcased on the runway for clients.
It’s that fashion forward outlook that is part of what Sage love’s about designing as well. She is able to, as a designer, sew and create her very own ideas of garments she herself would want to wear. Creating pieces you wouldn’t normally find in Saskatchewan is part of why she loves what she does. The highlight for her is “... getting to create something different… something the way you want it to be.”
Another unique “challenge” of being a designer and a student? She had to present her line to her classmates. I don’t know if there is more of a challenge than that!
Sage Wosminity will show her Fall/Winter 2015 collection on Saskatchewan Fashion Week's runway, Saturday, May 9. View the live stream starting at 7 p.m. to see her collection.
