Sometimes beauty tricks make a lot of sense, and sometimes…they don’t. We asked the experts, Saskatchewan Fashion Week’s hairstylist and makeup artists to share their advice, experiences, and product recommendations for skin care, color corrections, and styling secrets.

COKE ON THE LOCKS
In a recent interview, actress and model Suki Waterhouse revealed her secret for getting tousled locks: “I rinse my hair with Coca-Cola sometimes. I don't like my hair when it's washed – it's fine and limp – but Coca-Cola makes it tousled, like I've gone through the Amazon or something.”

I tried the Coca-Cola hair rinse twice because the first time didn't work at all! I shampooed, conditioned, and rinsed with Coca-Cola. I highly recommend leaving it out unopened overnight otherwise you'll be pouring freezing cold Coke on your head and it's not a pleasant experience. I then proceeded to blow-dry my hair as usual. I didn't use any of my normal styling products. My hair was so incredibly limp and lifeless. I decided to try again, but this time I washed my hair with the cola, using nothing else and let it dry naturally. It may have been a tiny bit more voluminous, but it was greasy by 6 p.m. that day. I usually wash my hair every three to four days.
I found myself missing my hair products immediately and couldn't see why this would work for Suki - but to each their own! Here is a list of my favourite volumizing products. As someone with fine hair I like to think I'm an expert in this area:
Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion
Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip
The hair potion can be used on the roots to enhance the appearance of thickness and amplify volume, as well as dusted on mid lengths to ends to create 'second day hair.' Add a small amount of the potion into your palm, emulsify slightly to liquify and scrunch into damp or dry hair. For a more textured look use a small amount of the defining whip to add weightless separation and hold. Less is more, start with a small amount of product and build as desired.
PRO TIP: Do not shake the hair potion bottle prior to applying to your roots as the powder turns into a liquid when worked. Gently squeeze the bottle repeatedly to spray or sprinkle the product on to the hair, then work it into the hair until you achieve desired volume.
MIX TAPE
When the Queen of Pop, Lady Gaga takes the stage in glittery eye makeup, the singer songwriter’s makeup artist uses Scotch Tape to remove any flecks of glitter that have fallen onto her cheeks.

Although Scotch Tape does work well to remove glitter, I find that using a clean spooly (mascara wand) to very gently brush off glitter from the face works very well and prevents removing any of the foundation, which can happen from the adhesive on the tape.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
To keep her complexion blemish free and glowing, actress, model, and singer Scarlett Johansson swears by apple cider vinegar, “I researched natural skincare and found that apple cider vinegar is really effective. Using it as a toner can be harsh, but if you have breakouts it can be really healing."

Using apple cider vinegar (ACV) as part of your facial cleansing regimen is reported to help prevent acne and skin infections, remove excess oil, and balance pH levels. ACV is rich in Alpha Hydroxy Acids that are used to help remove dead skin cells and reveal a healthier complexion.
My advice is to choose an organic ACV that is unheated, unfiltered, and unpasteurized. I purchased ACV from Body Fuel Organics in Regina, which retails for $5.99. It is best to dilute ACV because it can be quite harsh on its own when applied all over the face. I diluted mine using a 1:3 ratio, one tablespoon ACV per three tablespoons lukewarm water. If you have sensitive skin, start with a 1:5 ratio. I used the ACV mixture as a toner after washing my face - apply with a cotton ball or cotton pad all of the face and neck while avoiding the eye area and do not apply on eye lids or directly under eye, which will cause irritation. I didn't find that the ACV toner stung but some say it may on acne spots. My face didn't feel too tight or dry after using the ACV. I applied moisturizer on top of the ACV. Another method is to leave the ACV on for ten to 20 minutes then rinse using warm water before applying moisturizer.
The positive benefits of using ACV are it doesn’t dehydrate my complexion, it's affordable for every budget, and is versatile in the way it can be used. It has a strong fragrance so that’s a consideration if you’re sensitive to fragrances.
JUST ADD KETCHUP
Nadine
Actress, model, and fashion designer, Sienna Miller revealed that she used ketchup to remove the green tinge from her hair after a bad color application.

Theoretically this could be effective because red is opposite of green on the colour wheel so it should neutralize the green cast, but I’m not sure the concentration of dye in ketchup would be enough to remove the green cast entirely or how many times the method would have to be used for it to be effective.
Although the theory is scientifically proven, similar to how purple in blonde toning shampoos neutralizes yellow and gold tones in blondes, I would recommend a salon treatment instead of the hotdog condiment.
PETROLEUM JELLY
Sara
In an interview with Cosmopolitan Magazine, actress Rachel Bilson said he uses Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to remove her makeup. "It just works really well—especially when you're removing eye makeup—and it's gentle on my skin."

Petroleum jelly will remove makeup because of the slip and texture but I don’t recommend using anything petroleum based on your skin. Coconut oil is a natural and very effective eye makeup remover and will leave the skin around your eyes feeling moisturized and clean. At Sara Lindsay Makeup Studio, we carry RMS Raw Coconut Cream an organic beauty product that retails for $23 and can be used as makeup remover, facial cleanser, and skin moisturizer.
